Here we delve into the world of photo manipulation by photographer Erik Johansson.
The world is witnessing a vicious turmoil. The real life is been fantasized by many and efforts are been made by photographers to infuse reality into stills. Called Photo manipulation, the technique has come as a weapon in the hands of designers, photographers to create an illusion or deception and not just restricting it to enhancement or correction. Photo enhancement is done by adjusting the color/contrast, maintaining the sharpness of the image, thus producing a flawless out product.
Today we have with us the artwork of Erik Johansson, a renowned photographer and retoucher from Sweden based in Berlin, Germany who gave new meaning to term “photo manipulation,” thanks to his creative side, experience and patience in learning during all this while. Retouching is seen as an art form done largely for commercial purposes i.e. manipulation done for advertising photography such as beauty, fashion or any other campaign.
Erik is known for capturing ideas and not moments. To him photography is just a means to realize ideas in this mind by giving them a shape via his photographs. Every single work from Erik contains hundreds of layers but he focuses hard to make it look like it’s captured. Having studied Computer engineering at Chalmers University of Technology and with masters in Interaction Design, Erik resumed his professional journey on photography path, his first love. Year 2011-12 kept him occupied with both personal and commissioned projects while Erik is hopeful to work on film side in 2013.
Inspiration is everywhere and you can create anything you imagine. Inspire and be inspired
Erik is self taught in both photography and retouch. Thanks to his first digital camera in 2000 (when he was 15) that gave him opportunity to play with photos and turn a sketch into life. Imagination has been his biggest asset and he possesses it from around him. He also believes one’s perspective towards things/life breeds imagination.
Wondering who is Erik’s inspiration: Don’t be surprised as this photographer takes inapiration from painters. Some of the artists that inspire him are:
Salvador Dali – Spanish surrealist painter
M.C. Escher – Dutch graphic artist
René Magritte – Belgian surrealist artist
Rob Gonsalves – Canadian painter
Jacek Yerka – Polish painter
Shaun Tan – Australian illustrator
Mattias Adolfsson – Swedish illustrator
Sven Nordqvist – Swedish illustrator/author
It takes Erik couple of weeks to several months to realize one photo from idea to real life sketch. It depends upon the accessibility of shooting a perfect shot amidst right season. His artworks can be seen as surreal ideas realized in a realistic way with a touch of humor.
Advice: Idea is as important as realization and vice versa. Think Differently.
